Announcing Africa Rural Connect!

Africa Rural Connect (ARC) is a project being implemented by the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) to support connections among the African Diaspora and improve the livelihoods of farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The network will blend the inside knowledge of Africans, Peace Corps Volunteers, and Africa scholars to innovate ways to bring about positive economic development in Africa.

ARC is a program that will forge collaboration between Peace Corps volunteers, the African Diaspora, and others with experience working in Africa to offer ideas and do development work on the continent.

NPCA is building another online community for ARC and once the website is established, the ideas, suggestions, and data derived from the network will be used to inform development program efforts that directly reach the poorest populations in Africa. It will focus on agriculture-related issues including food production, storage, transportation, agribusiness, markets and market information, and research. The project will benefit greatly from the involvement of first generation Africans who want to share their stories about their home countries, and recommendations on the above topics, with others in North America and around the world. In essence, we want to give Africans a voice to help themselves.

This summer, we will coordinate a contest with a Grand Prize of $20,000 and 3 prizes every month for the best business plans to improve agricultural practices in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Africa Rural Connect virtual community will launch early July 2009. We will send out more information when it launches. In the meantime, you can join this group to stay informed! Africa Rural Connect
